Check The Title Of A Motorcycle With A Vin

The vehicle identification number (VIN) of a motorcycle contains numbers and letters that relate to specific information about the motorcycle, such as manufacturing year, engine type and other model-specific options. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in each state uses the VIN of every vehicle, motorcycles included, to track registration details and other vehicle information. Before purchasing a motorcycle, it’s important to verify ownership and make sure that it hasn’t been involved in any type of accident.

Instructions

1. Obtain the VIN from the motorcycle in question and write it down on a piece of paper. If this is a motorcycle you are looking to purchase, you will have to ask the owner for permission to record it.

2. Contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles by telephone. Ask to speak to someone in records and vehicle registration.

3. Inform the clerk that you are attempting to verify the registration history of a motorcycle. Provide the clerk with the VIN number when prompted.

4. Record the information that the clerk gives you. Most often, personal information is not available to anyone other than the vehicle owner, but in most states the DMV will be able to verify title information.
